XBox 360 vs PS3: Why It Doesn’t Fucking Matter
For all the back-and-forth criticism I see going on between Sony devotees and so-called “Wii60 fanboys”, when you look at all the cross-platform titles which are either on their way or already available, you must inevitably come to the conclusion that you’re largely getting the same shit no matter which system you buy.

People often say that the PS3 “has no games”, and to a degree it’s an accurate statement for the moment, but once the cross-platform storm is underway, it’s going to have most of the same games the 360 has. Likewise, PS3 owners who get on a soapbox bitching about “quantity vs quality” and how the 360 only has “crappy shooters” will soon be eating their words when most of the quality PS3 titles are appearing on 360 as well.
While exclusive titles do exist and can provide some reasoning to pick one system or another, the truth is, people place far too much importance on exclusives. Halo is not the end-all be-all of first person shooters, and Metal Gear Solid is equally over-rated. I’ve been a huge Final Fantasy fan since the NES and SNES days, but I’ve been burned by Square Enix far too often lately to really even care about Final Fantasy XIII…much less spend $600 on a console just to play it. It’s nice to see games like Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, and Bioshock straying from the beaten path and trying something new, but many people are treating these games like guaranteed smash hits when the merits of their game play mechanics have yet to be proven.

It looks like a lot of exclusive games, but out of those two lists, there’s only scant few which could really be considered highly enough to drive decisions or be called “killer apz”. I don’t think people will be by-passing the PS3 solely to get their hands on Crackdown or Call of Juarez. Nor are 360 owners really going to cry over missing games like Resistance or Lair.
Ultimately, Sony fanboys can cling all they want to their precious little MGS4, and 360 fans can spew naively about how Halo 3 and Mass Effect will be awesome, but the truth of the matter is, when you consider that red-hot 3rd party franchises like Grand Theft Auto, Guitar Hero, and Resident Evil will be pushing systems on both sides, it turns into a rather moot point.
So yeah, if you’re a really hardcore fan of Ratchet and Clank or Gran Turismo, I can see why you would prefer a PS3. And if you’re a shooter nut or into more avante-gaurde RPG’s, then I can see why you would want a 360 above all else. But, there’s still no reason to get all “high and mighty” on either side. The magnitude of controversy over these systems is uncalled-for and downright stupid.

Thank you. Finally, I now know there our others that see the light. I like to laugh of this new generation because fan boys on either side boast, with no technical idea, that their system is way more powerful than the other. Where us old school gamers know its not how powerful a system is its what games it has and how many of those games appeal to a wide audience range. Having all three systems I would say I like my Wii just because its not the same old rigamarole as the others. If you think about it its all the same just better graphics. Sony tried to make a stab at innovation by copying the old pelican six axis from their first generation. Yes thats right Wii60 fans boys they didn’t copy the motion sensing it from the Wii they copied their first gen thrid party controller maker. But the PS3 doesn’t have that the old pelican did was rumble. As for my opinion on who has better graphics… well I wont answer that because I’m tired of over privileged twelve year olds flaming me. Glad you liked the article. I have considered linking this article at N4G to get more traffic, but I have shied away from doing so simply because I know it’s only likely to bring a bunch of stupid flaming console-war trolls around my blog.
I was somewhat guilty of favoring the SNES back in the day, but you’re right, at least back then it was easy to tell exactly which system was most powerful. More importantly, the selection of games was more clear cut; while the Genesis had a few cult classics like Streets of Rage and Gunstar Heroes, I far prefer the experience I had with the various Nintendo, Squaresoft, and Capcom titles on SNES to the few hits on Genesis (though my house had both systems).
However, I certainly didn’t waste my day away ranting about how much the Genesis sucked, or how Sega fans must have been delusional idiots (or “fags” as kids today put it so eloquently). The whole practice taken to the extreme of fighting internet war campaigns for your favorite console is stupidity in absolute form. However, I suppose we only have sky-rocketing console prices to blame, as simply buying up all major systems and picking up the good games as they come out has been made an economic impossibility for many…as a result, the less intelligent of the bunch are forced to justify their purchasing decisions by convincing themselves that the systems they don’t own are maddeningly worthless.
Just a minor correction, but I believe that Rainbow 6: Vegas is out on PS3, and it looks like Ghost Recon 2 is coming to the PS3 this week.
In all honesty I love the game line up on the 360. That was the main factor that made me give the 360 a try. Ultimately I went back to Sony but this wasn’t due to there software line up. It was due to the 360 hardware failure. Going thru two systems was enough for me. So I went with reliable hardware, call me old fashion but I have every system since the NES. And they all still work! I guess I’m the few that likes to get there moneys worth.
Honestly, it sounds to me like you’re hating on the PS3 more, and this is coming from a 360 day 1 owner. Personally im not that impressed by either system and consider the PC to be far superior

finally someone who loves the games. it doesn’t matter which system is more powerful,if i had the cash i would have all three systems.they each have titles i would love to play, but with my finances what they are,i went with the 360 for the amount of games that appealed to me.i been playing games since atari 2600 and i have every system up to the dreamcast,ps2 & xbox and all are working just fine. somedays i get my oldschool fix, other days i want the high def and hit gears of war,all are still fun. quit whining over which is best , just like the author said all have merit,so shut up and play.

But honestly, look at the amount of money Microsoft alone is throwing around for the Xbox 360, they are now at a total of 6 Billion dollars in debt. Look at Sony’s investment of the PS3, they aren’t expecting to return their investment on the PS3 until halfway through it’s 10 year lifespan. And we’re talking BILLIONS upon BILLIONS of dollars.
Eliminate all the viral marketers, and PR mudslinging done from both companies and we wouldn’t HAVE to be neck deep in the trenches picking sides.

I agree with your line of thinking. A true gamer will not single out a console as “the best” and bash all other systems as inferior but I do have a couple of issues with all of this.
First (this is a minor oversight on your part I believe), both Rainbow Six Vegas and GRAW2 are also on the PS3.
Secondly, you ask the question “What RPG’s are on the PS3?” Both FF XIII titles are the obvious ones but how about White Knight Story, The Last Remnant, Monster Hunter 3, Two Worlds, Rise of the Argonauts, and Shin Megami Tensei?
Finally, your post seemed unbiased but when you respond to reader’s comments you really come across as a 360 Fanboy and Sony hater. Don’t feed the trolls!

It’s great that there are 2 consoles that can do nearly the same in terms of graphics and gameplay but now we can look at what exclusives we like most. I myself enjoy MGS and FF so that makes PS a no brainer but I can completely understand why other people would enjoy Halo3 etc.
on a side note: You should check out PSN which will release games like “echochrome” (or something) and off coarse little big planet which I do think fit in the “original” category.
A good point was made- the high price of gaming today forces some folks to justify their purchase of one console over the other. Most folks can’t seem to take the veiw that it is the multiplatform games that should drive their choice- not the exclusives. The tv requirement is another factor that should be included as well as the price of the consoles and games. For what a PS3 costs, I could have bought a Genesis, SNES and a tv to play them on. Such is the price of progress I’m afraid.
Excellent writeup. It seems the war is only between the fanboys. The real gamers don’t really care either way. I guess technically I’m a PSWii user until I pick up the 360. I always prefer to have all options open for me. It’s the whole thing about justifying costs right now. With the price drop though, I’ll be picking up one sooner than later but until then, I’m pretty satisfied with what I got.

The author used only an inkling of samples in the Exclusives List. For RPG lovers, he left out Eternal Sonata and Blue Dragon–both 360 exclusives at the moment. Quite a few games in his current list are prone to cross-platforming, and he only provided the list as an example, not as the “end-all” list of exclusives for either system.
If you want to take a hard look (and yes, I guess there’s slight bias here), the 360 exclusives list are mostly “already released,” and the PS3 list is mostly “in the future.” However, the 360 exclusives list was shortened to be 14-15, to match the 14-15 titles of the PS3. If you tally up the entire 360 list of exclusives it’s a far greater number up to Sept 2008.
However, I do agree with the author. It doesn’t matter which system is better. It’s about the games and which games you enjoy. I’m tired of the retardation occurring over the internet over the systems because as another poster mentioned, it’s simply cognitive dissonance–morons trying to justify their purchase by cognitively bashing all the other systems.
Yeah, I agree. I was up in the air, and it was mainly the failure rate and included WiFi that pushed me to the PS3. Everyone is going to win in this one. They are both going to have some great games and each system will have their share of turds as well. I think everyone should pair em up with a Wii though. Just consider it accessory.

Btw, most people using the 360s stability as a crutch should probably end those arguments now. All new 360s have 2-heatsinks and a new re-designed motherboard, which (without the 65 nm CPU) is enough to solve the majority of RROD issues.

It does matter you idiot. You get what you pay for. PS3=High end quality, Xbox=mid range quality, Wii=girly toy. And no, even though a game is ported to multiple platforms doesn’t mean it’s the same game. Sony has and will always dominate home console market -because they understand what gamers really want (Quality) and better GFX.
I have a 360 from initial launch. Played countless hours of Oblibion. I have 2 friends that do the same. Neither box has gone down. Whats with all this BS about all the Xboxs breaking? I actually dont know anyone that has had an Xbox fail. I am happy with it. PS3 looks sweet in the stores. But I cannot spen that much yet. And if i could, i dont know why I would.

It’s natural for a person to give into fanboism when you’re spending upwards of $700 or more to get into the next generation of games, you feel the need to justify your purchase by telling yourself (and others as nauseum) that the other systems are crap. I personally own a 360, a Wii, and a gaming PC, and I enjoy them all. I shy away from the PS3 because it uses a format that is not yet officially proven in the market. I enjoyed the PS2 and many of the games it offered. Honestly, I’d ditch every one of these consoles if they released their games on PC.

Great article. I’m a PS3 owner because I had limited funds, a stack of 50 PS2 games, a broken PS2, and never had an Xbox or Windows PC and thus never got hooked on any of the 360’s exclusives. Nothing against the 360, other than a slight pique about wi-fi, which is a must-have requirement for my house setup.

Comparing consoles by which games they’ll have or how pretty they look is probably as pointless as arguing about religion. I’m no fanboy and I own both systems, but I’d have to say that the PS3 is my favorite of the two. Yes thats just my opinion but if you don’t see the software and hardware advantages that the PS3 offers (even just aesthetics) over the 360, then you must be retarded. Sony designed a beautiful system through and through with a lot of attention on detail along with many fun bells and whistles to go with it. Microsoft did what they’re good at and designed a piss poor interface thats designed to advertise but not do much else. What features did MS bother to include that you don’t have to buy for extra $$$? In my book, the PS3 was actually worth the money I paid for it. The PS3 shows that Sony was concentrating on the user’s experience, not the users wallet.

I hope that was sarcasm. I have all 3 consoles, and I love them all for their strenghs. To me, it’s all about the games. Always has been. Just as much as I’ll be playing Resistance one second, I’ll switch over to the 360 and play that Bioshock demo yet again. I just wanna play, the shape of the box where I put my games in is irrelevant, much like this fanboy console war.

Great exclusives sell systems, whether it’s 2 or 200 of them. Halo 3 will sell systems, MGS 4 will sell systems, hell Unreal Tournament 3 will sell PS3s because it’s a timed exclusive.
I’ve never visited this site before, and I doubt I’ll ever visit it again, Captain Obvious makes a good, though overcooked, argument for live and let live, but I don’t get the point, and it’s not going to close any fanboy camps on either side of the fence. I’ve heard a million people say the exact same thing, hell, I’ve said the same thing.

I’m glad someone picked up on this. That list was only intended as a general example, not a definitive one, and it wasn’t the point of the article. Furthermore, the list is about a month old, and since then some titles have gone multiplat while others have become exclusives. Furthermore, I made that list by simply scanning across 1up and listing the major titles that were easy to spot…I don’t have all day to scour the net hunting down every last game – I’ll leave that to the fanboys.
In the end, whether the list is 100% accurate or not is not important; the only people complaining here are the fanboys who are pissed that I forgot to mention one of their favorite system’s precious games. This article is not about keeping score, and if people couldn’t pick that up by reading the article, they need to go back to school.
Lastly, I think it’s funny that you seem to see an anti-360 bias to the article, since others have commented accusing me of an anti-PS3 bias. Like I said, I’m not keeping score here – I think there are valid criticisms to be made of both systems, and if fanboys from one or the other side end up offended, then they can go cry in the corner about it; I don’t care.

First of all, that line was not a part of the article, it was a reply in the comments. Secondly, there’s nothing hypocritical about ranting about ranting. To spend an hour writing an article for a blog is one thing… to sit there all day scouring news sites for headlines you can tally as a “win” for your favorite console, or a “loss” for the enemy console, and then spend hours argueing in a petty manner over the “score” with fanboys from both sides is another.
If you’re that anxious to grasp for criticisms of this article, it would seem to me that you’re just another hurt fanboy that got their bubble burst when I said your favorite topic of contention wasn’t important. Would you like a tissue?

You’re desperately trying to say something irreverent, but you fail to really make a point. No shit you’ve never been to this site before; prior to this article apearing on Digg.com today, practically no one visited the site. Today this article scored more hits in a few hours than this blog did through the entire past year of rising through the ranks of 1up.com and being featured in the “popular blogs” sidebar in the 1up frontpage twice, as well as scoring several frontpage features on Deeko and N4G.com.
To be honest, this is far from one of my best articles; the point is extremely simple and its not even very long; half of the space or more consumed by pictures and lists rather than text.I don’t consider the fanboy issue that important, and there are far more poignant articles on this site. However, it obviously struck a chord with people, because it exploded in popularity today with 18,000 views where every other article on this site is lucky to get 1,000.
It’s a simple point, but obviously its a point people agree with and are glad to hear, otherwise this article would not have exploded across the internet the way it did. Since you don’t really seem to have any other point, it would appear that you’re simply jealous that an article with such a simple message could get so much attention. Maybe you’re in need of an ego boost for today, so you decided to go trolling on this site to show off your e-penis. Whoever wrote this article is an idiot. Not only is it ridiculous to consider similar genre games to be the same game in aspect (are you kidding me? Do you even play videogames?), you are only addressing part of the issue of the console war in its entirety. Many people nowadays are not just interested in the gaming aspect of their system but rather the entire media support and features of it. What about High Definition support for movies? Streaming media data from computers? Online media downloading? etc. While the Xbox 360 does not contain a built in HD-DVD player, it does support an add one. Meanwhile, the PS3 goes the Blu-Ray route. Two different high definition media formats currently battling over the number 1 position that, in the end, could decide a drastic number of sales for either console.
There are a lot of things different about the xbox 360 and the ps3, including the hardware and to say that it “doesn’t fucking matter” is about as equal as saying you aren’t informed enough to even be writing about current videogame systems at all, yet alone an article on the matter at hand.
What an ignorant rant. The only issue I can relate to is Square-Enix bastardization of all the Final Fantasy games produced after VIII.
If the systems are largely undifferentiated–as you’re arguing–then it’s those exclusive titles that will sway a purchaser one way or another… so they’re obviously VERY important.

And Great White Shark, you’re missing the point; whether the exclusive titles sway purchasers one way or another is irrelevant, as the purchaser will have a choice from the same very large pool of multiplatform titles regardless.
People are almost completely forgetting that the multiplats even exist because they’re so obsessed with determining which console is a better buy, when in reality the existence of top 3rd party titles ensures that you will have most of the same great games to choose from whether you own a 360 or PS3. It’s getting to the point where some fans often sound disappointed when a respected title turns out to be multiplatform, because they don’t get to chalk it up as a “win” for their system of choice. The huge petitions to make Devil May Cry 4 exclusive once again when it went cross-platform is undoubtedly the most extreme example of this phenomenon, and its stupidity is downright disgusting.
A lot of games are multi platform, yes. And both systems have a fair amount of exclusives, yes. But simply looking at the numbers of multiplatform and exclusives and using that as a metric to
prove that both consoles will give you more or less the same thing
is absolute rubbish.

Hey, Julian, thanks for the reply here and on my blog. As I said over on my post, I totally agree… Xbox scored an early coup by having several big, buzz-worthy exclusives out early.
The funny thing about getting an early, large chunk of market share… there’s not much “pie” left for late-comers. At this point, I’m not sure how effectively marquee titles on PS3 could “turn the tide.” Regardless of which platform is supposedly better (I’m an Xbox fan, but purely out of familiarity), Xbox is winning hearts and minds (and therefore, the all-too-critical market share) thanks to–at the very least–timing and price.
Against the PS3, anyway. I think both MS and Sony are both shitting themselves over the Wii.

There’s a huge problem with your analogy. One, buying a Mercedes and a Lexus are in a completely different league than buying an old Toyota. Buyers who buy a Mercedes are rarely competing or in the same league as those who buy a Toyota. Secondly, luxury cars tend to cater to specific markets. You won’t see Hummer customers arguing with Lexus customers because they both want different things from their cars. Third, cars are limited by specific statistics. A car has better acceleration, braking, mileage, whatever, and that’s that. There’s no argument or debate. Usually the more you spend, the better the car.
For consoles, the debate is ABOUT THE GAMES. The games are the variable that everyone argues over because everyone wants the best game on their system. Buying a system doesn’t guarantee that it will have the best games, because exclusives change over time, that’s why everyone argues and wish and pray their system gets all the best titles.
Fanboys are envious of the other system’s getting exclusives THAT THEY WANT TO PLAY. That’s all there is to it. To compensate, the fanboys list their own system exclusives and hope to convince others that these games are “must-have, must-play,” so they can rest-assured knowing that “Well, the must-have game is on my system and their system only has the 2nd best game.”

No I’m not using the amount of games as a “metric” (talk about an unnecessary word) to argue the consoles are equal, the reason why I listed the games at all was simply to show that the list of notable multiplatform games generally dwarfs the list of notable exclusives. As other people astutely noticed, the list of games for PS3 and 360 was deliberately made roughly equal simply to avoid accusations of bias one way or another. The lists were not supposed to be definitive measures of the PS3 vs 360 library at all, in fact the point was to deliberately avoid comparing the PS3 and 360 in the first place, because that’s what the article was all about.
Also, it’s worth noting that the “STUPID” in all caps was merely a contorted quote of your own use of the word…the place where I actually did call you stupid was all lower case.

Why it DOES matter:
Each of the three companies has a very distinct vision of what the future of gaming will be. Sony has somehwat abandoned theirs, starting to move towards a “Game 2.0″ concept focusing on user-generated content and experiences (A good move, but the system is still stuck with their old vision)
Here are the visions.
360:Network connectivity above all else, Being able to see and share what games your friends are playing, building a large community and sharing your experience with them.
PS3:Focusing on providing a HUGE canvas for top-notch developers to bring out new levels of epic games.
Wii:Maintaining gaming’s mainstream demographics, and extending that to new markets/people. As well, providing new ways and concepts for interactivity.
All three have valid visions, and all three could completly change the face of gaming for the future. Personally, I think that the “huge canvas” strategy is very limiting, in that it puts gaming out of the price range of the mainstream, with very limited returns. But that’s just my opinion.

I would like to just to add my worthless comments. As an owner of both PS3 and 360. I have both machines to satisfy different hungers. The achievements within MS 360 Live are excellent.. Halo, Gears, Forza all flagship titles online game play 1st class. This doesn’t mean for one second that I am a PS3 hater. My PS3 is for 1080p HD Blueray, motor storm, GTA, Gran Turismo. The decision I am faced with now is what format do I buy multiplayer games for. Tiger woods 2008? Fifa 08? My choice will come down to a small number of facts, what do I want from the games? Tiger woods I will prob buy for the 360 I play a lot of 07 online with “friends” I liked these guys the achievements race we have, the gamer score battles and the banter it makes a great game better and much more open, However Fifa I will prob buy for my PS3 I personally find the PS3 slightly better for 2 player games locally rather than online and on certain games the PS3 can run slightly smoother.
I will continue to buy for both, They are both great machines for different reasons. It is just nice to see a post that actually shines some sense into an otherwise murky diluted games arena. Anybody who is going to slate another format should at least have a bit of fucking sense and not just rant like a fucking 5 year old. If you hate the 360 buy a PS3 and shut your mouth, If you hate the PS3 Vice versa if you hate both, Then stop reading fucking Gaming posts!

Hey man great article. I own a PS3, Xbox 360 & a Wii. I bought the 360 first because it came out first. And because the old Xbox did well against the PS2 (I mean it didn’t do crap right), I was, & still am, convinced that MS/360 can deliver really great games (GoW, Halo series, Bioshock as well as loads of multi-plat. such as Timeshift etc. I then went and got a PS3. Now i wasn’t one of those people that went and got the PSOne or PS2 at/ launch as i waited for more games to come out (I was 7 – 11 yrs old during that gen.. But my decision to buy the PS3 on the (UK) launch day was the same as the Xbox 360s. That I’m convinced that Sony/PS3 can deliver really great games (MGS 4, Tekken 6, HAZE, GTA IV – gta based on familiarity of the Playstation button config. and size of SIXAXIS). The Wii was just for the new experience. Yes if you look at the Hardware spec, then PS3 is better, as pointed out earlier it is the game line up AS WELL as the functions and Hardware spec. that sell the console(s). In my opinion PS3 will dominate in the future if we look at it now. Same for online play in which 360 will (keep) dominate(ing) in the future, if we look at it now. I think as for the game line up, we should give up deciding which console is going to be the best because games will keep on coming and us people living in super-power countries (US UK Japan Germany etc) we all have freedom of choice with games and each console has some feature(s) in which they dominance in.

as someone that has had moast systems (NENTENDO and after) i had a hard time picking my first nextgen. its always important to remember to be open minded and not get caught up in all this war crap. iremember the ps2 xbox time wiped the dreamcast off the map and me, i liked it the moast of the 3. the dreamcast was amazing dispite no DVD functuality and that you culdent get a scrach on the disk without it not working. the price of gaming is so hi now-adays i think everyone is just trying to justify all the dollars they blow (NOT ONLY A PS3 STAB BUT 360 AS WELL) 360 fans say there cross platforms look better but thats cus they were mad to work on it and ported to the ps3. and ps3 fans often think there system is better cus of the price and the blue ray format which dosnt seem much diff to me at all. to me it seemed like the ps3 was getting the moast hate (not in the article) so i got it first being the only of the 3 (360 ps3 wii) hadent played. i love it but the 360 is good to (CRAP OUT OF ROOM)

just to point out nither 360 or ps3 are a let down to me just that from all the hipe i Xpected more. and i may have miss worded. just wanting fun games meaning both have them and i want to try them regardless of the system. i love the games ihave on ps3 (resistance oblivion and warhawk spacificly) but am going to get a 360 for games like dead rising DOA and overlord. and the wii has alot of potential but moast games are aimed at mainstream market. iwill get one within the next year or so once i can get a good number of solid games just now its more than abit lacking in my opinion.in the next year or 2 i hope people realise that all 3 have great games and you cant go wrong with any of them. oh and i havent got a chance to play red steal but itsone i am looking forward to wen i get a wii. and if you need a online Xpiriance warhawk is one of the best on any platform i personally have ever played. it is the main reason i think the ps network is aboght as good as Xlive but its free there-in lise the equality (i will add you and give my full thoughts on warhawk if ican)
I agree with the article, and above all else Gaming should prevail, for that matter I’ve got the 3 systems, just the Xbox 360 died, and just before Halo 3, I don’t mean to sound biased to take one company side, but this is too much, I spent a lot of money in accesories for the 360, and in return,I get a flawed console.
My PC is working the entire day with a SLI 8800 GTX pair, still they don´t give me a Checkered pattern or freezing problems, neither do the PlayStation 3, or Wii, so how come a “Next Generation Console” has a cooling system from a “Stone Age Generation”?….After trying the new systems, I feel like the true Next Generation Providers are from Asia, not the US, but not because of the software…

i have had the opportunity to own both 360 and ps3 and personally i dont like to hear a fan blowing thats 4 times louder than my computer, though it can be quieted by simply having surround sound. I admit halo is a fun game with a great story, but it seems as though microsoft is trying to base everyones reason to by the console for 1 game, and for the poor people out there, come on you can just give up on the original xbox like that. On the other hand, my friend spent 750$ for a ps3 on ebay, like an idiot, and, to this day, i still absolutely hate the controller. At first impression i was shocked by how bad ps3 was at launch, but i was optimistic. while still playing 360 i researched the ps3 and found that it had potential to be a very intelligent machine and, like a normal person, waited 2 months and got a 60gb right off the shelf for 600$ (my friend got the 20gb on ebay, hahah but a dumbass). I later shocked to find that sony was very dedicated to updating their system to all the gliches and things living big holes in peoples gaming and system experience. Though some may agree, ps3 is not a simple machine made for simple tasks, it can also be of help, organizing things in a fashionable manor. playstation network does suck balls but small progressive improvements have been shown. i am recently aware that rumble controllers will also be coming out for playstation in the near future which makes the console battle even more intense. In reality the one to choose is the really the one whose looks you prefer.
true, it all three have their own good games. the only problem is, i’ve heard a lot of reports about xbox 360 breaking down. now, some would say that it isnt as bad as it is, but for microsoft to actually extend their waranty to 3 years means that they are expecting their units to actually bog down. and i have no intention of spending that kind of cash on a system that may just suddenly stop working. microsoft should adress this problem as this could be one reason why some would prefore other consoles.

Just give a non-biased reply to this: If I get only one of either an XBox 360 or PS3 next year, what should it be? Gears of War, Forza and Bioshock are great as long as I’m lucky I don’t get the RROD (I’ve never won in any game of chance or lottery, go figure how lucky I am). Then I love the Final Fantasy and Gran Turismo series but FFXIII and Gran Turismo 5 aren’t available yet. The fragile or the currently-no-game console?
Btw, I’m getting a console because I tire of upgrading my PC every six months. A console that is fragile with many currently must-play games or one that might be more powerful (though I heard it’s harder to develop on) but has no current must-play games I wanna play is a big dilemma. Imagine if I brought an XBox that breaks on its 6th month or a PS3 sitting unused on my living room waiting for FFXIII or GT5. Either case will be very dissappointing.

These AMEX rewards points are burning a hole in my pocket. They are taunting me with game consoles and shiny things in their catalog. But given my original XBOX experience, I’m thinking I should just beef up my pc via AMEX gift certs.

I was considering buying a 360 at first, but then ended up getting PS3, and honestly, it just come down to what you want out of a console…
I wanted something to play DVDs & HD movies with, stream my media from my computer, and play some football when my friend comes over for a beer, so PS3 with built in wireless and built-in blu-ray, and dedicated Optical Audio and HDMI to suit my needs better, so I purchased it and I am happy.

first of all why dont half of you tools get a blowup doll and get laid,cause thats the only action your going to get if you sit here and debate all night. i have wii,ps3, and 360 and i think they all have certain games that are better. i bought wii for mario games,i dont expect much for graphics, just entertainment. the 360 has forza and a couple others that are exclusive. ps3 is still developing and with time comes great games, so im not worried. its going to ultimately come down to the companies decide how they want to go, either HD or BlueRay.
I just looked through the list of games you showed, and I found it painfully obvious that you just said that the 360 is better. None of those PS3 games are the 10/10 or even 9/10 types. And more than 4 of the xbox ones are. Playstation 3 simply just doesn’t have any good games. It’s graphics, when compared in split-system games, are by far less realistic (the lighting effects ESPECIALLY), and the framerate on nearly all Xbox 360 games is far superior. Most 360 games run on 60 fps, while PS3 games run either 30 or 45. Xbox 360 has games like Halo 3, Bioshock, Mass Effect, and Gears of War. And what does the PS3 have? Some chick whipping a sword around? Lame.
Plus, in 3 years time when your PS3 dies because you’ve watched a ton of movies in it (which is very hard on the drive), you’ll have to buy a new console all together. While with the xbox, you just buy the $150 HD Drive, and if that breaks then you only have to buy a new one of those instead of a whole freaking console.
Plus, Xbox 360 has been out a whole extra year, and they’ve worked out most of their glitches and it’s fairly cheap now, only $500 for a system with a 120GB hard drive, while the PS3 is $700 for a 80GB hard drive (which in the end is the real price difference). The PS3 still is ridiculously priced and it’s super glitchy, and it’s selection of games is weak. Yes, it’s got a lot of the same games as the 360, but so what? Then get a 360. It’s got it’s own amazing titles and all the good one the PS3 has.
Let’s talk Online support. The when the Xbox 360 first came out, people saw what a Huge step online gaming had taken. With the Xbox 360 Dashboard and Xbox Live Marketplace for tons of downloadable content, massive friends lists and tons of other kickass features, it’s truly amazing what you can do. And what does the playstation 3 have? Some mediocre attempt to best Microsoft. Sorry guys but Microsoft owns this playing field.
How about controllers? The 360’s controllers fit perfectly into just about anyone’s hands, and they even come in different sizes and colors and designs. The playstation 3’s controllers are chunky, have hardly changed from the PS2’s, and they feel incredibly awkward to hold. And for the extreme gamers who play all day, your hands will cramp up and get extremely sore after only a couple hours.
The only thing that the Playstation 3 beats the 360 in is end sound quality. The xbox 360 supports HDMI 1.2, which is high def sound, but the PS3 has HDMI 1.3, which is TruHD, the latest stuff around. But otherwise, the Xbox 360 is by far superior.
And by the time Sony comes out with a better, less-glitchy version of the PS3, the next generation of Xbox will probably be out already, seeing as how the PS3 was just released, and microsoft have already said they are working on the new Xbox. Sony just can’t keep up with Microsoft.

Srry im not trying to say the ps3 sucks. Its a great system. It just pales in comparision. Im a real gamer. I want a system that has amazing games great graphics and tons of other great features. I’m sticking with the Xbox 360 because Halo 3 is all I need. All other games are the same. COD4 is good everywhere so is Rock band. The Blu-Ray is a great movie experience, and for at least now the HD-DVD is the same damn thing. My time with the PS3 has been very brief, hopefully they can release something that interest me other than Rachet and Clank (which is kick ass). Despite all this I continue to buy games for the Xbox 360 and every once in a while rent games for the PS3. I like how the PS3 graphics look. They re shiny, probably better than the 360…I don’t know. The Xbox 360 has a way better online community and features, not to mention better games, but in the end I can’t pick one. I like them both, and right now I am just trying to get some money to buy a Wii, mostly because so many of you people say it’s so damn fun.
Since the PS3 has come out, even though I have less friends who own it, I’ve heard of more complaints about it breaking than I’ve heard about the Xbox 360. One of my best friends on my soccer team boughht a PS3, and it broke on the 5th day. He took it to the store and had it replaced (because it was within the 7 day in-store warranty) and traded it for a new one. Then that brand new one broke in the first 50 minutes of playing it. Honestly, while people say that Xbox 360’s break a lot, so far it looks like PS3’s are actually worse. It’s just that so few people have them that it hasn’t been addressed as as big of an issue as the 360.
I guess that point is valid, that it really doesn’t matter, like say if you wanted to give me either one I wouldn’t bitch and say that I would rather have the other one. But as far as buying it for myself, I feel like it is a pretty big decision. Maybe some people out there are ballin in a way where they don’t have to think twice about dropping that kind of cash, but for me I want to feel lilke I made the right decision. In the long run I know I’ll get the same kind of enjoyment out of either system, but I am still stressin over which one to buy. All I know is that my new HDTV is really pissed that it has been working with a PS2 for the past 3 mos. It’s like the employee of the month getting paired up to work with the retarded kid that got the job through some special needs program.
Of course, and that says a good point mikeyg. If I was being given one of these two consoles, I wouldn’t argue about which one it was, because face it, you’re getting a good gaming system either way. Seems to me that consoles are always old technology. Admittedly, I paid a lot of money for my very high spec pc but I can play most of the games that are available for pc, at much higher resolution, texture rates, frame rates etc than any console. I can also check my mail, write a novel, do all my work, watch tv, dvd’s, listen to my entire music collection, surf the net, etc. What exactly is the point of consoles? They just seems to br cut down computers. Also, my pc is completely silent and completely upgradable. Save your money and buy a decent graphics card for your computer.
1. Xbox Live is $5 a month. If you can’t afford to pay that measly amount, then you’re a hobo. Please, people pay $15 a month just for WoW.

It does matter in my opinion. Why?
- The XBOX is MUCH louder than the PS3 (40 gig version). I have both the PS3 here and a XBOX which is only a few weeks old (Falcon edition) – when I play GTA the PS3 is absolutely silent and when I play GTA on the XBOX I feel as if I had forgotten to turn the vacuum cleaner off. This is a BIG advantage of the PS3 in my opinion.
- PS3’s online mode is free. I can download the same game demos as on the XBOX – but for free! I don’t have to pay 50 bucks each year (which already outprices the XBOX if you play for more than one year). I can play all the games online without being charged for it. Another BIG advantage for me.
- PS3’s controllers are also better. They are wireless as well and are innately equipped with a rechargable accumulator and automatically get recharged when you connect them to your PS3 by cable. For the XBOX controllers I’ll first have to buy rechargable accumulator packs and another package for recharging them.
- Connector-layout on the back is also better on the PS3. On the XBOX the HDMI port is directly about the normal AV-port and you can’t connect a HDMI/DVI cable without breaking your AV-cable. So if you don’t want to break your AV-cable, you’ll have to spend some money again and by an extra cable from microsoft. On the PS3 the ports are layed out better and you have no problems connecting a separate HDMI/DVI cable.
My conclusion: In the end, the XBOX is even more expensive than the PS3 if you appreciate some comfort.

I must say Garry, for someone who owns all the consoles, you really have no idea what you’re talking about, do you? Different consoles have different games, and many people are lured to different games. Right now, the Wii is the most current family attractive console, which is why it’s great for parties and for people of all ages. However, the PS3 and Xbox 360 appeal to the more serious and older gamers. Mainly due to more producing companies and it having been out a whole year longer, the Xbox 360 has a much wider, better game selection than the PS3 does. Right now, if someone wants really fun games and a large selection to choose from, then they should go with the 360 because they have a lot of well known titles and a lot more range in games currently over the Playstation 3 does. That’s just the fact. There are the people out there who want to rant on about one console being so much better than the other, and I’m sure that if you got down to it and really looked into it seriously, that you would definately find that one console is truly better than the other, but most people just want good games to play, and at this current time, the 360 offers a much better selection of games. Some people play lots of video games, and I mean LOTS. This means that they’re going to need lots of games for once they’ve gotten tired of the ones they own.
I went out and spent a little bit looking at console-shared games comparisons, and I’ve found that almost every site that’s done these tests have come out with the result that while both consoles are almost completely balanced, the Xbox 360 does just edge it out in better performance. However this really isn’t a big factor. I’ve gone up and read through previous poster’s comments, and many of them have some pretty good points, while some are just ranting nonsensibly. If people want to go and research the facts and tid bits of everything, then that’s great, because it’s a way for them to pass the time or do something that interests them. Most people just want to play the games.
So my end point is that most people just want to play games, and different people have different game interests, so the console that currently is the most popular for a good reason is the 360 because it offers the best game selection. I’m sure in the future that the PS3 will come out with great titles, but right now the fact is that the 360 just has a better selection. There are also people out there who enjoy researching facts and checking out specs, and you have no right Garry to slash them on this. If they enjoy it or want to spend their time doing that, then you should respect them instead of trying to cut their tree of happyness down.
i love both consoles and the games they have on each and while i think the ps3 will last longer, im forced to buy the xbox 360 due to price restraints. in australia, the 360 can be bought for 399 bucks as a pro pack and a game. whereas the ps3 costs 649 for just the console.
atm i think australia should have US$ pricing seeing as though our currency’s are pretty much the same.
but to stay on track. i love the ps3 and playstation in general (i have a ps1 and ps2) but i dont care about people saying it “pwns 360″ – im getting a 360 cos i reckon its suuccchhh a better buy. and in the future, well i may buy the ps3 as well.

Just wanted to point out that my dad spent over $600 for the intelivision back in the eighties. We didn`t care so much about graphics because we knew they`d never compare to playing outside, hence saving the video games for rainy days.

It doesn’t matter since no developer is capable of using the SPU to it’s full capacity, I believe the max it was able to get was 80 percent, and anything higher is impossible. Yes it’s a powerful piece of machinery, but what’s the point of producing excessive power that’s not even usable. Leave the “which console is more powerful” alone and choose the one that you have the budget for and the one that may have exclusives that you have been loyal to in the last gen.
