The music player is a holdover from the 1up version of the blog. It’s sort of a My-Spacey gimmick common on 1up to make your page seem more high-tech, which often becomes annoying when you visit someone’s page only to have it suddenly blast crappy music at you.
However, I added one to my site to attract attention to the blog, mainly because I wanted to expose more people to my less-mainstream taste in music, and I felt the music in my playlist was less offensive that the loud gansta rap and emo pop-punk shit blaring on others’ pages. It turned out I was sort of right, and I had people praising my choice of music on multiple instances; even people who were against putting music players on blogs admitted that my playlist was not annoying like the others.
In short, there were a lot of Depeche Mode, Smiths, Cure, Sundays, and Morrissey fans among my friends on 1up (one person loved in particular the inclusion of ‘Headhunter’ by Front 242) so the playlist was appreciated.
I decided not to include the music player as a default accessory when I moved to WordPress. For one thing, WordPress doesn’t allow any kind of flash or javascript on hosted sites, but furthermore, I wanted the blog to seem more profession and not be shoving unrelated music in your face. However, sometimes when I go back to my old blog I find myself enjoying the music and missing it the player. So, I decided on my WordPress blog to include a link to the music player in the sidebar, so if you want, you can open it on the side and have it playing while you browse the blog.
I currently have the above link set to stream the playlist in Windows Media Player (since WordPress doesn’t allow flash) however, if WMP doesn’t work for you, you can view through the Project Playlist site for more options, or just open up my 1up page in an extra browser tab to shuffle through the tracks at random.
Enjoy.
